Trek on the impressive Apuan Alps!
The Apuan Alps, a mountain range parallel to our coastline and the Apennine range, with dramatic sharp peaks slightly higher than 1900 m.(6230 ft.), are one of the truly great natural wonders of the world.
Here are some recommended routes:
- Campocatino Nature Trail – Hermitage of San Viano (average journey time 2.30 h)
Easy loop route that allows you to go over the whole glacier valley of Campocatino. Walking along the first section between the “little house” of the shepherds, you will reach the beech woods at the foot of the north-western face of theRoccandagia. You cross it to the south-east corner. Once on the unpaved road that leads to Campocatino you can close the ring (AJT h 1.30) or take the steep trail that descends to the hermitage of S. Viano encased in a rock face overlooking the Arnetola Valley. - Forato Loop Route (average journey time 5.00 h)
From Fornovolasco you take the CAI Route N.6 which rises to the mouth of Petrosciana passing close to the “Hole that Screams” (in Italian Tana che Urla) and from the source of the Chiesaccia. From the Mouth a clear, not marked path runs along the ridge, passing near the arch of Forato (1223 m on the sea level) to reach the Foce di Valli; the alternative is given by CAI 131 that go slightly down but leads to the same town at the foot of the southern side of the Pania della Croce. From here you take CAI 130 passing a few shed houses you reach again Fornovolasco. For the shortest route from Forato mountain, you can go down the CAI 12 until you come back to No. 6 and end your tour in Fornovolasco (AJT hours 3.30) - Orto di Donna Loop (average journey time 4.30 h)
Once you leave your car at the end of the paved road that leads to Orto di Donna, near the refuge Donegani, you go up on CAI 180 to the mouth of the Giovo, here with a short deviation to the right you reach the summit of Pizzo d’Uccello ( Recommended only for expert hikers). Our tour continues, however, on a slight slope for the route CAI 179 under the walls of the ridge of the Garnerone and of the Grondilice, up to Cava 27, where the marble road ends. Here there is the new refuge of the Apuan Alps Park. You continue now to route CAI 179 passing close to the bivouac K2 to Foce di Cardeto. From here CAI 178 path goes down to the wood to go back to the departure point.
